Why do we tend to be so short sighted when it comes to money?

"We're moving on up to the east side to a deluxe apartment in the sky."

This line from the theme song of the "Jefferson's" speaks volumes about how we view wealth. He's idea of wealth is moving out of his neighborhood and renting an expensive apartment. As a former employee in one of Atlanta's premier malls, I can say that many of us would rather look good than be well. Why is it? How can we fix it?
